So you know what I want for the future, what about my past?

Personal

I've had an interest in technology for as long as I can remember having access to it. I first had access to a computer aged 7, and continued to tinker with our family computers up until I got my own at 14 years of age.

My first experiences with HTML were purely a continuation of my tinkering from years before, and nothing really came of them. However, my interest in the world of web design started back in 2005 almost by accident with a task requiring me to look at a way to design a few pages of information for display as part of an extra-curricular project. Subsequently I stumbled upon some of the work on display at the CSS Zen Garden and began to investigate building strict XHTML/CSS interfaces.

As I was starting from scratch with little knowledge of exactly how proper web interfaces should be built, moving straight to table-less layouts wasn't a problem for me, it was simply how I learned.

As my skill set developed I offered my services to friends and family and began to follow the work of others such as Daniel Cederholm of Simplebits and Daniel Burka of SilverOrange, Digg and Pownce, who I also had the pleasure of meeting at 2007's Future of Web Apps conference in London.

More recently my interests have lead me to working on the development side of things. Starting first in PHP, small personal projects and developing in conjunction with others on other sites have given me a solid grounding in Object Oriented Programming with PHP, as well as a good working knowledge of PHP with MySQL and basic SQL. Now I'm using what I've learned with PHP to develop my programming skills further with the Ruby on Rails framework, which allows the creation of rich web Object Oriented web applications quickly and efficiently.

With regards to CSS3

You may have noticed I'm using a lot of CSS3 markup on this site. Why? Well, I believe it's important for designers and developers alike to push the use of new standards to encourage their mainstream adoption. This site was designed to work flawlessly with both CSS2 and CSS3 enabled browsers, so your browsing experience will not suffer at all from not using a CSS3 enabled browser, things will simply look a little more spectacular if you do! I recommend Firefox 3 from Mozilla, or Safari 3 from Apple for the best browsing experience on anywhere on the internet.
